"When you travel to the Waipi'o Valley today you
not only step into a place steeped in the history
and culture of Hawaii, you are entering one of the
most beautiful places on the face of the earth."
- John Fischer, Your Guide to Hawaii

"Starting from the Big Island's most beautiful valley
overlook, take the challenging switchbacks of an
ancient Hawaiian footpath past waterfall gulches
and over cliffs to pristine Waimanu Valley."
- Hiking in Hawaii

"Waipi'o Valley is as beautiful a place as you will
ever visit.  With unimaginably steep walls on all
sides, waterfalls etching the perimeter, fields of
taro and a lucious mile-long black sand beach,
Waipi'o never fails to impress.  The instant you
arrive at the lookout above this awesome
spectacle, you realize why this place was so special
to the ancient Hawaiians."
- Hawaii The Big Island Revealed

"To you and me, Waipi'o is a quiet, peaceful place.
But if you've had the place all to yourself for years,
even a few people a week would seem like a
crowd."

Hikers from our last trip along the Muliwai Trail . . . Almost there!
The spectacular Waipi'o Valley from the overlook above!
Description:  It’s a long, but gorgeous drive up the northern Hawaii coast from Hilo to the Waipi’o Valley.  Along the way you
pass gulch (deep mountain draws) after gulch.  Some of the gulches have spectacular waterfalls; others have shallow rivers
or streams surrounded by a dense cover of colorful vegetation.
Upon arrival at the Waipi’o Lookout, you immediately see what has brought you so far from home.  The Waipi’o Valley is
bounded on three sides by towering, green cliffs and an amazing black sandy beach on the last.  The Valley is so green that it
practically glows and the contrast between the towering green cliffs, the blank sandy beach and the crystal blue water is
breathtaking.
Once down in the Valley, the first task is crossing the Waipi’o Stream.  It’s only
slightly higher than knee deep, but extreme care is required to make sure you don’t
get all of your gear wet.  Once past the stream, the hike begins with a bang as you
can stroll, for quite a distance, barefoot along a pristine black sandy beach to the
end where the Muliwai (Waimanu) Trail begins.
You do not want to underestimate this trail!  At the beginning, it is a continuous,
strenuous, vertical climb out of the Valley.  Once at the top, however, the trail repeats
an enjoyable pattern of winding around a finger, into a draw, past a gorgeous
stream or waterfall, and back out to another finger.  This repeats about 13 times
until you reach the last peak that looks down on the spectacular Waimanu Valley.
The valley is similar to the Waipi’o Valley, however, you are no longer at the edge of
a city, you are completely immersed in the Hawaiian backcountry.
Once at the campsites, we will stay there
for two nights with the second day there
aloted to day hikes around the Valley or for
simply relaxing on the beach.  There are a
number of spectacular waterfalls and sites
to see in this lush, hidden valley.
Resting in the Valley is extremely
necessary as the climb out of the
Waimanu Valley is unbelievable.  If you
thought the climb out of the Waipi’o Valley
was difficult, then you are in for a treat!
This climb is definitely one for the record
books.  Once out, though, you wander back
the way you came in and are ultimately
rewarded by the easy descent into Waipi’o
Valley that seemed so difficult on the way
up.
One of the most spectacular things about
this beach is that the campsites are about
20 feet from the beach.  You are literally
camping ON the black sand!  Imagine
sleeping to the sound of crashing waves
and being cooled by the refreshing beach
breeze (which conveniently blows the
mosquitoes away as well) all night long.
There are nine campsites.  All of which are
beautiful.  There are a couple of pit toilets
and that’s the only sign of civilization that
you will find.

The Wai'ilikahi Falls from a distance
When you finally reach the bottom, you again cross a knee deep stream and arrive
at another pristine black sandy beach.  If you’re lucky there will not be a single other
person on the beach.  If you are unlucky, there might be one or two people.  Either
way, you have escaped the tourist crowds that tend to haunt Hawaii and its amazing
beaches.
